How to Keep Your Appliances Running Longer

Follow these best practices to avoid common breakdowns and extend the life of your home appliances.

Fridge & Freezer

  • Clean the condenser coils at the back every 6 months to prevent overheating.
  • Keep the door seals clean and check for cracks — a worn seal wastes electricity and reduces cooling.
  • Don't overfill your fridge; allow air to circulate between items for even cooling.
  • Set the temperature between 3–5°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer.
  • Avoid placing hot food directly in the fridge — let it cool first to reduce compressor strain.

Washing Machine

  • Clean the lint filter after every wash to prevent drainage blockages.
  • Run a hot empty cycle once a month with baking soda to clean the drum and remove odours.
  • Never overload the drum — stick to the recommended load capacity to protect the bearings and motor.
  • Use the right type and amount of detergent — excess foam can damage seals.
  • Leave the door open after each wash to allow the drum to dry and prevent mould growth.

Cooker & Oven

  • Clean the burner caps and ports regularly — food debris blocks ignition and gas flow.
  • Wipe spills immediately after cooking to prevent corrosion and clogged igniters.
  • Have your gas cooker hoses and connections inspected annually for leaks.
  • Avoid using foil to line the oven floor — it disrupts heat circulation and can damage the element.
  • Never leave the cooker unattended and always ensure gas valves are fully closed after use.

TV & Electronics

  • Use a surge protector or voltage stabiliser — power fluctuations are the #1 cause of TV mainboard damage in Kenya.
  • Ensure your TV has adequate ventilation and is not placed directly against the wall.
  • Dust the vents regularly using a dry cloth or compressed air to prevent overheating.
  • Switch off your TV during lightning storms — power surges can permanently damage the screen.
  • Avoid cleaning the screen with wet cloths or chemical sprays — use a dry microfibre cloth only.

Microwave

  • Never run the microwave empty — always have food or a cup of water inside when operating.
  • Clean the interior after each use to prevent grease buildup on the magnetron cover.
  • Use microwave-safe containers only — metal or foil can cause arcing and permanent damage.
  • Cover food while heating to prevent splatters inside the cavity.
  • Don't slam the door — damaged door switches are a very common and preventable repair.

General Electrical Safety

  • Install a voltage stabiliser or AVR for all major appliances — Kenya's power grid can have fluctuations.
  • Don't overload extension cables — use dedicated sockets for high-power appliances like fridges and microwaves.
  • Schedule annual servicing for your major appliances even when they seem to be working fine.
  • Always switch off appliances at the plug when not in use to reduce standby power draw and fire risk.
  • If you notice sparks, burning smells, or strange sounds — switch off immediately and call a technician.
