Electric Oven Not Working? Here's the Most Likely Cause
Electric oven faults are highly predictable — in the vast majority of cases, an oven that won't heat up has either a failed heating element or a broken thermostat. Both are affordable, fast repairs that a RepairTech Kenya technician can complete at your home in Nairobi in under 2 hours.
Understanding Your Oven's Heating System
A standard electric oven has two heating elements:
- Bake element (lower): The main cooking element. Used for baking, roasting, and general cooking.
- Grill element (upper): Used for grilling and browning the top of food. Also used in combination with the bake element for fan-assisted cooking.
The thermostat regulates temperature by switching these elements on and off. The thermal fuse is a safety device that permanently blows if the oven overheats.
Most Common Reasons an Electric Oven Won't Heat
1. Failed Bake Element
The bake element is the most commonly replaced oven component. It experiences repeated heating and cooling cycles over years of use, eventually causing the element's resistance wire to break or burn through.
Signs: Oven doesn't heat at all, or only heats from the top. You may see a burn hole or visible break in the lower element when you look inside the oven with the door open.
Fix: Bake element replacement costs Ksh 2,000–4,500 including parts and labour.
2. Failed Grill (Broil) Element
The upper grill element fails less often than the bake element but is still common, especially in ovens used frequently for grilling. If the oven heats from the bottom but not the top, the grill element has likely failed.
Fix: Grill element replacement costs Ksh 2,000–4,500.
3. Faulty Oven Thermostat
The thermostat controls temperature by reading the internal temperature and switching the elements on and off accordingly. A failed thermostat may prevent the oven from heating at all, or cause it to run too cold or too hot.
Signs: Oven doesn't reach the set temperature. Food consistently under- or over-cooked. Oven temperature display doesn't change despite heating.
Fix: Thermostat replacement costs Ksh 2,500–5,000.
4. Blown Thermal Fuse
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device. If the oven overheats (from a fault or from being left on for an extended period), the thermal fuse permanently blows, cutting power to the heating circuit. Unlike a regular fuse, it cannot be reset — it must be replaced.
Signs: Oven completely stopped working — no heat at all, and possibly display issues.
Fix: Thermal fuse replacement is affordable (Ksh 1,500–2,500) but the reason for overheating must also be identified.
5. Control Board (PCB) Failure
In modern digital ovens, the control board governs everything. A failed board can prevent the heating elements from activating. This is the most expensive fault (Ksh 4,000–8,000) and is typically diagnosed after elements and thermostat have been ruled out.

Electric vs Gas Oven Faults — What's Different
If you have a dual-fuel cooker (gas hob, electric oven), the gas burners and the oven can fail independently. See our guide to gas cooker not igniting if the problem is with the burners. This guide covers only the electric oven section.
