Gas Cooker Won't Light? Here's What's Happening
Most ignition failures in Nairobi are caused by simple, affordable-to-fix issues. The good news is that you can often fix the most common cause yourself.
⚠️ Safety First
If you can smell gas, DO NOT attempt to ignite the burner or use any electrical switches. Turn off the gas at the cylinder, open windows to ventilate, and call RepairTech Kenya immediately on 0742 539 455.
5 Most Common Reasons Gas Burners Won't Ignite
1. Clogged or Dirty Burner Caps
This is the most common cause of ignition problems in Nairobi — and the one you can fix yourself. Food spills block the small gas ports around the burner cap.
- Make sure the gas is off and the cooker is cool.
- Lift off the burner cap and the metal support ring beneath it.
- Soak both in hot soapy water for 30 minutes.
- Use a soft brush or toothpick to clear all blockages in the gas ports.
- Rinse, dry completely, and reassemble.
2. Faulty Piezo Igniter
The piezo igniter creates the spark. Over time it wears out and stops generating a strong enough spark to ignite the gas. Replacement costs Ksh 2,500–3,500.
3. Cracked or Misaligned Electrode
The electrode sits beside the burner and creates the spark. It can become cracked or moved out of position. Electrode replacement is Ksh 1,500–2,500.
4. Wet Igniter System
A boil-over can wet the igniter and electrode. Allow the cooker to dry thoroughly — at least 24 hours with all burner caps removed.
5. Gas Supply Issue
Check: Is the gas cylinder empty? Is the supply valve fully open? Is the regulator functioning? A faulty regulator is common in Kenya and reduces gas pressure significantly.
