TV With Sound But a Black Screen — What's Happening?
You switch on your TV, you can hear the audio perfectly, but the screen is completely dark. This is one of the most common TV faults we fix across Nairobi, and the good news is that it's almost never as serious as it looks.
The Most Likely Cause: Backlight Failure
Modern LED TVs use rows of LED strip lights behind the screen panel to illuminate the image. When these LED strips fail, the image is technically being generated — it's just invisible because the light source behind it is gone.
Quick test: In a darkened room, press your phone's flashlight against the screen. If you can faintly make out an image, your backlights have failed but your screen panel is fine. This is great news.
Other Causes of a Black Screen With Sound
Mainboard or T-Con Board Failure
The mainboard processes all signals. The T-Con board drives the LCD panel. If either fails, you may get audio but no image. These boards can often be repaired or replaced at Ksh 3,000–10,000.
HDMI or Input Source Issue
Check that your TV's input source is correctly set (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, TV, AV, etc.) and that the cable is properly connected. A wrong source selection causes a black screen with the TV working fine.
Inverter Board Failure (Older TVs)
Older LCD TVs use CCFL backlight tubes powered by an inverter board. A failed inverter board causes the same symptom. This is also a repairable fault.
