When Your Fridge Is Too Cold
While a fridge that's too warm gets most of the attention, a fridge that's too cold is equally problematic — and surprisingly common in Nairobi homes. Frozen vegetables, icy drinks, and frost-covered food are signs that your fridge's temperature control system has failed.
Why Is Your Fridge Freezing Food?
1. Faulty Thermostat (Most Common Cause)
The thermostat is the temperature-sensing and control component of your fridge. Its job is to switch the compressor off when the fridge reaches the set temperature. When the thermostat fails — specifically when it gets stuck in the "always cold" position — it never signals the compressor to stop. The fridge keeps cooling and cooling until food freezes.
Signs: The fridge runs almost constantly. Food in the main compartment is consistently frozen or partially frozen, regardless of where it's placed. The temperature dial appears to be in a normal/moderate position but the fridge is clearly too cold.
Fix: Thermostat replacement. Cost in Nairobi: Ksh 2,500–4,500. Takes about 1 hour at your home.
2. Temperature Dial Accidentally Set to Maximum Cold
Before calling a technician, check the temperature dial inside your fridge. In homes with children, or after cleaning inside the fridge, the dial can easily be turned to the maximum cold setting.
Fix: Turn the dial to a moderate position (usually marked "3" or "4" on a 1–7 scale, or "Medium"). Allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilise.
3. Temperature Sensor (NTC Thermistor) Fault
Modern fridges with electronic controls use a temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) rather than a mechanical thermostat. If this sensor fails and reads a falsely warm temperature, the control board will keep running the compressor, making the fridge colder and colder.
Fix: Sensor replacement costs Ksh 2,000–3,500.
4. Blocked Air Vents Inside the Fridge
If the air vents that distribute cold air inside the fridge are blocked (usually by packing food too tightly against the back wall), cold air from the freezer section can flood the fridge compartment, freezing items near the back.
Fix: Rearrange food so that nothing is touching the rear wall or blocking the vents. Leave 5–10 cm of space at the back.
What's the Correct Fridge Temperature in Kenya?
Set your fridge to 3–5°C. This temperature:
- Keeps food fresh without freezing
- Slows bacteria growth effectively
- Is efficient on energy — running colder wastes electricity and stresses the compressor
If your fridge has a numbered dial (1–7), setting 3 is usually around 4°C. If it has Min/Max markings, stay away from Max unless you need to cool a large load quickly.
