What's Normal and What's Not
Fridges produce various sounds during normal operation. The challenge is knowing which sounds are harmless and which are early warning signs of a developing fault.
Normal Fridge Sounds (Nothing to Worry About)
- Low, steady hum: The compressor and fan motors running normally.
- Gurgling or bubbling: Refrigerant circulating through the cooling system. Completely normal.
- Single click when the compressor starts or stops: The thermostat switching the compressor on or off.
- Dripping sound: Defrost water draining into the drip tray during defrost cycles.
Sounds That Mean Something Is Wrong
Loud, Repeated Clicking Every Few Minutes
This is the most concerning fridge noise. Repeated clicking indicates a failed start relay. If left faulty, the compressor runs hot and risks permanent damage. Start relay replacement is affordable (Ksh 1,500–3,000).
Loud Constant Buzzing or Whirring
A loud buzzing that doesn't stop usually comes from a noisy fan motor — either the condenser fan or the evaporator fan. Fan motor replacement costs Ksh 2,500–5,000.
Loud Rattling or Vibrating
Rattling is usually not an electrical fault. Check: Is the fridge level? Are items on top vibrating? Is the drain pan underneath loose? If level and still rattling, call a technician to check compressor mounting.
Knocking or Banging Sounds
Periodic knocking from the back of the fridge can indicate the compressor is about to fail. This requires prompt attention to avoid a complete breakdown.
